Example5a PEDAL TONE IN 5THs WITH DIATONIC CHORDS

Guitar Techniques - - INTRO -

Another useful pedal tone approach – instead of using the root of the key – is to use the 5th of the key. This is very useful in implying a sort of elaborated V-I (the most resolute cadence (release of harmonic tension) in tonal harmony). Rather than simply using E7 to A, here a series of chords from A major are used over an E pedal, creating a series of slash chords, which feel like a moment of tension before resolving to A major.
