Example5b PEDAL TONE IN 5TH WITH PARALLEL CHORDS

Guitar Techniques - - INTRO -

Here’s the same idea extended. The tension of the 5th pedal is heightened with the use of ‘parallel’ chords. Rather than drawing these chords from a particular key, the same chord type (a major triad) is transposed in parallel chromatic

maj7b5 descent, followed by a chord in whole tones. Despite its complexity this is heard as simply an elaborated ‘dominant’ passage before resolving to A minor. You’ll recognise a similar technique in Stevie Wonder’s Too High.
