Example9 Embellished voiced leading with three-layered approaches
EOur final example shows how Wes might embellish a simple voice-leading connection in descending semitones through a major II-V-I in G. In part 9a, we establish the basic descending move from B (9th of Am) to A# (D7’s #5)
Eand finally resting on A (to create G major 9). Example 9b fleshes this out with associated chord tones and in 9c we thicken the line in octaves. Finally, 9d showcases Wes’s block chords with the same voice-led B-A#-A at its heart.
