EXAMPLE1 Eric – First solo
This is the solo Eric is playing as the track fades in. Lots of traditional blues motifs, including the wobbled 7th chord in bar 1, plus the different inversion in bar 2. He follows up with some more aggressive-sounding string bends, playing across the beat in bars 4 and 5, and you can hear him really digging in to the lower strings towards the first turnaround. The second half of the solo keeps the pressure on, with lots of whole-tone, half-tone and quarter-tone bends, the odd trill and some flamboyant slides – indeed, it sounds as though Eric is determined to make an impression on Duane. Take what you can from this while remembering it was a spontaneous jam and it wouldn’t be in the spirit of improvisation to obsess too much over detail.
