ExamplE1 I IV V ConneCtIons

Guitar Techniques - - LEARNING ZONE -

We begin our lesson by exploring the connections between the 3rds and 7ths of a set of Dominant I-V-V chords, in this instance in the key of A (A7-D7-E7). This four-part study highlights the semitone connections between these guide tones when travelling from I7-IV7 (notes G-F and C#-C) and I7 to V7 (notes G to G# and C# to D). As the example unfolds we move from big six and five-note voicings, all the way down to Freddie’s one-note ‘tenor’ counter melody choices.
