BRUCE WELCH RHYTHM STYLE: PALM MUTING ON ELECTRIC
cd track 6
Bruce didn’t always stick to acoustic in the studio, as some songs called for a more direct electric sound, as in this example. Notice how the main riff in the repeated opening bars utilises triplet rhythms, ‘root and 5th’ basslines, and palm muting to create a very slick, hypnotic rhythm pattern. Many of The shadows’ songs contained quite unusual chord progressions; in this example only the chords C, F and G are diatonic to the key of C major.
