HANK MARVIN: MAJOR SCALE 3RDS
cd track 11
Hank wasn’t obsessed with blues players (this wouldn’t become fashionable until later on in the mid 60s) so he wasn’t afraid to explore diatonic Major scale sounds. The most famous of these is the opening lick to Cliff richard’s summer Holiday based on double-stop 3rds (very Buddy Holly!). This example is a little darker, utilising slides, whammy bar bends and vibrato. The end result is the Hawaiian sound that Marvin would often explore in his riffs and solos.
