Orig­i­nally pop­u­larised by An­tônio Car­los Jo­bim and Brazil­ian gui­tarists such João Gil­berto, this style is the sta­ple ac­com­pa­ni­ment tech­nique for soft, latin play­ing. The chordal em­pha­sis is mostly on the off-beat, with the thumb main­tain­ing a sense of place in the bar by high­light­ing beats 1 and 3.
