SALSA IS An ex­cit­ing blend of Cuban styles and be­came es­tab­lished in new York in the ’70s. The name was used as an um­brella term for pop­u­lar Cuban dance mu­sic, and to pro­mote the mu­sic in­ter­na­tion­ally. The word ‘salsa’ in Span­ish means sauce and the mu­sic is usu­ally up-tempo with a tum­bao bass line. The ‘son clave’ (See Fig 2, p30) is of­ten used in this style in both the 3:2 and 2:3 for­mats.
