When Garsed first encountered Holdsworth’s playing, he was greatly moved by its blend of expression, emotionality and humanity but he was unable to decode the details and theory behind the music. He interpreted the complexity within it as a kind of ‘general legato chromaticism’. Example 1 shows a couple of representative phrases. note the use of fretting-hand legato slurring which gives the chromaticism a lovely fluidity.
