When Garsed first en­coun­tered Holdsworth’s play­ing, he was greatly moved by its blend of ex­pres­sion, emo­tion­al­ity and hu­man­ity but he was un­able to de­code the de­tails and the­ory be­hind the mu­sic. He in­ter­preted the com­plex­ity within it as a kind of ‘gen­eral legato chro­mati­cism’. Ex­am­ple 1 shows a cou­ple of rep­re­sen­ta­tive phrases. note the use of fret­ting-hand legato slur­ring which gives the chro­mati­cism a lovely flu­id­ity.
