Eric John­son is very fond of this pat­tern as it can im­ply har­mony with a spEarse bass and drum back­ing. Es­sen­tially, it’s the same idea as ex­am­ple 1, in­ter­voeal­lic woei­der but ad­ding the bass note gives the im­pres­sion of a skip. I’ve also hinted at how the pat­tern can be shifted to dif­fer­ent groups of strings in the last bar. When play­ing with a driven tone, it’s prob­a­bly best to use a lit­tle palm mut­ing on those bass notes.
