[Bar 1] For this typ­i­cal Matthews-style in­tro, keep the pick­ing hand re­laxed and use the first fin­ger to hold down the 5th fret of the fifth string and the fourth fin­ger to hold down the 7th fret of the fourth string – this will set you up for the mov­ing the bass notes in the next sec­tion.

[Bar 5] Mov­ing basslines against a static chord is a very typ­i­cal Dave Matthews de­vice so use the third fin­ger for the note on the 7th fret of the sixth string and in the next bar I’d sug­gest the first fin­ger for the 3rd fret and the same fin­ger for the 5th fret.
