The recording mics we used for our session

Guitarist - - The Tone Doctor -

Shure SM57

This microphone has gained legendary status as the one that can literally do anything. Its great on vocals, guitars, drums, brass instruments, and so on. For under a hundred quid, you can own a microphone that has recorded a million hit albums!

AKG C414

A more serious mic and investment at just under a grand. This condenser mic has been around since the early 70s and can switch from a standard cardioid pickup pattern to an experimental figure of eight pattern. A hugely versatile option.

NeuMANN TLM 102

Another heavyweight name in mic design. Most Neumann mics are out of reach financially for the home recordist, but this little mic – a fixed cardioid pattern condenser – is wonderful for recording all instruments and comes in at under £500.
