Finnish blues rock spiced with slide For her 10th album, the versatile Lyytinen embraces a rockier side as an artist without losing her blues roots. Rocking Chair has a driving 70s low-end riff groove and Lover’s Novels is a funkier affair, but both benefit from her fiery trademark slide work. And it’s interesting to hear the bursts of twin harmony work spicing the Hendrix leanings of the title track and the epic here, Black Ocean – featuring a standout three-part solo steeped in emotive drama. The aptly named Slowly Burning features expressive slow blues lead, but when 24 Angels breaks into its stride it again proves just how engaging that slide work can be. [DH] Standout track: Black Ocean For fans of: Bonnie Rait, Gary Moore, Joanne Shaw Taylor
