Paul Weller
A Kind Revolution
The Modfather continues to play unpredictably
For a man with nothing left to prove, Weller shows no sign of laurel-resting. He threw himself into this after scoring his first film soundtrack, Jawbone, but don’t expect any punk rock with that album title. This is a frequently soulful record. Long Long Road embraces more of Weller’s sentimentality, and Satellite Kid ’s fluid lead-guitar emphasis recalls his mid-90s rock. Elsewhere, he’s pushing forward while glancing back with the sci-fi strut of Nova – there’s a strong Bowie thread here and in the phrasing of New York and One Tear, both have left-of-centre grooves with bass to the fore, and a freeness that carries over into She Moves
With The Fayre’s funky rhythm with an airy croon
