I’m not sure anyone ever expected a riesling to win Wine of the Year, but our awards this year brought a couple of surprises.

That winning riesling comes from this issue’s cover star Duke Ranson and his special site in Porongurup, WA, where he works closely with winemaker Rob Diletti.

Turns out he’s got a great story to tell too, as do our other award winners, so we loved talking to all six passionate producers for this issue. For a peek at the action of our big night and the stories behind the big wins, turn to page 23.

Also in this edition, we delve into Australian chardonnay and chat to some of its star winemakers to hear where this variety is headed. And if that inspires you to seek out some examples to try – they’re bang-on for spring – we showcase a diverse dozen from around the country.

We also take a trip out to New Zealand’s stunning Waiheke Island and Costa Brava in Spain, with its many incredible eating and drinking opportunities, as well as the vast Great Southern region of WA. You can also hear from TV chef and long-time wine lover Rick Stein, choose from some enticing recipes from Adam Liaw, and learn a little more about sherry, with UK-based wine writer Jane Parkinson selecting 12 standout styles. Plus, don’t miss our handy guide to some of the latest and greatest red wines.

We hope it all results in some excellent drinking over the coming months.
