“Sleep is so im­por­tant to me now, be­cause for so long I failed to treat it with the re­spect it de­served.this fail­ure be­came painfully clear to me on the morn­ing of April 6, 2007, when I was lying on the floor of my home of­fice in a pool of blood. On my way down, my head had hit the cor­ner of my desk, cut­ting my eye and break­ing my cheek­bone. I had col­lapsed from ex­haus­tion and lack of sleep,” says the pres­i­dent and ed­i­tor-inchief of Huff­in­g­ton Post Me­dia Group.the in­ci­dent even­tu­ally led her to re-eval­u­ate her re­la­tion­ship with sleep and yielded some fas­ci­nat­ing in­sights into what is such a vi­tal part of life but can so of­ten be side­lined. Huff­in­g­ton shares th­ese in her new book, The Sleep Rev­o­lu­tion (read an ex­tract on page 174). I sleep … “eight hours a day. Once I changed the amount of sleep I was get­ting, other habits, such as ex­er­cise, be­came eas­ier.” I de­cided to write this book be­cause … “it’s clear that if we’re go­ing to truly thrive, we must be­gin with sleep”. The most in­ter­est­ing per­son I con­sulted while writ­ing the book was … “Dr Maiken Ned­er­gaard from the Univer­sity of Rochester, who said sleep ‘is like a dish­washer’ for the brain. The brain is in a state of in­tense ac­tiv­ity dur­ing sleep, per­form­ing all sorts of vi­tal func­tions, in­clud­ing clear­ing out tox­i­cwaste pro­teins (the kind as­so­ci­ated with Alzheimer’s).” My favourite bed­sheets are … “the ones de­signed by my daugh­ter Is­abella, who is an artist for Coco-mat.they’re based on one of her paint­ings.”
