Vol­un­teer awards fi­nal­ist

MUR­RAY res­i­dent Raalin Wheeler has been recog­nised for his ser­vice to fight­ing fires across four shires.

As a fi­nal­ist in the vol­un­teer of the year awards, Mr Wheeler, the owner and op­er­a­tor of Wheeler Air­field, was used as a front­line run­way and re­fu­elling point for fire­fight­ing air­craft ev­ery year since its con­struc­tion in 1997.

Mr Wheeler is a fi­nal­ist in two of the award cat­e­gories, WA Vol­un­teer of the Year and Peo­ple’s Choice ‘Spirit of Vol­un­teer­ing’.

Wheeler Air­field was used in sup­port­ing fire­fight­ing ef­forts dur­ing the Jan­uary 2016 Yar­loop bush­fires, in which it made 30 move­ments a day at a seven and a half minute turn­around.

Re­cip­i­ents of the Vol­un­teer Awards will be an­nounced at the Na­tional Vol­un­teer Week Gala Awards Pre­sen­ta­tion Din­ner at the Hy­att Re­gency Perth Ho­tel on May 10.
