Volunteer awards finalist
MURRAY resident Raalin Wheeler has been recognised for his service to fighting fires across four shires.
As a finalist in the volunteer of the year awards, Mr Wheeler, the owner and operator of Wheeler Airfield, was used as a frontline runway and refuelling point for firefighting aircraft every year since its construction in 1997.
Mr Wheeler is a finalist in two of the award categories, WA Volunteer of the Year and People’s Choice ‘Spirit of Volunteering’.
Wheeler Airfield was used in supporting firefighting efforts during the January 2016 Yarloop bushfires, in which it made 30 movements a day at a seven and a half minute turnaround.
Recipients of the Volunteer Awards will be announced at the National Volunteer Week Gala Awards Presentation Dinner at the Hyatt Regency Perth Hotel on May 10.
