Vol­un­teer award win­ner

AF­TER decades of help­ing pre­serve his re­gion from bush­fires, Mur­ray res­i­dent Raalin Wheeler was awarded the WA Vol­un­teer of the Year award at a gala din­ner last week.

Mr Wheeler con­structed the Wheeler Air­field in 1997 which has be­come one of the top front­line run­ways in WA, used as a re­fu­elling point for fire­fight­ing air­craft ev­ery year.

The air­field saw ex­ten­sive use as a front­line base for fire­fight­ing dur­ing the Wa­roona-Yar­loop bush­fires in Jan­uary last year.

Re­cip­i­ents of the vol­un­teer awards were an­nounced at the Na­tional Vol­un­teer Week gala awards pre­sen­ta­tion din­ner at the Hy­att Re­gency Perth Ho­tel on Wednesday, May 10.
