Volunteer award winner
AFTER decades of helping preserve his region from bushfires, Murray resident Raalin Wheeler was awarded the WA Volunteer of the Year award at a gala dinner last week.
Mr Wheeler constructed the Wheeler Airfield in 1997 which has become one of the top frontline runways in WA, used as a refuelling point for firefighting aircraft every year.
The airfield saw extensive use as a frontline base for firefighting during the Waroona-Yarloop bushfires in January last year.
Recipients of the volunteer awards were announced at the National Volunteer Week gala awards presentation dinner at the Hyatt Regency Perth Hotel on Wednesday, May 10.
