Honour for long service to CWA
A TORCHBEARER at the Sydney Olympics and president of two Country Women’s Association branches, Rosa Tognela has been honoured for 40 years of service.
Mrs Tognela has been the WA State president, State international officer, assistant to the South Pacific area president, Geographe area president and president of the Wagerup and Burekup-Brunswick branches.
In these roles she has attended numerous national and international conferences.
Mrs Tognela joined the association in 1977 which all started when she was taking her motherin-law to meetings in Wagerup.
“I was very happy to take her but, by the end of the day she had paid my membership,” Mrs Tognela said. From Wagerup, Mrs Tognela moved to the Burekup-Brunswick branch, where she was voted secretary and president again before becoming division president for the Geographe region.
In 1997, Mrs Tognela became president of Country Women’s Association WA and was assistant to the South Pacific area president, covering Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific nations, up until last year.
For the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Mrs Tognela was a torchbearer on behalf of the Country Women’s Association Women of WA in a leg through Perth.
“At the end of the run, the association had a breakfast in the park and that was very special too, and all my family were there,” she said.
Mrs Tognela moved to Bunbury seven years ago and joined the local CWA branch.
“There’s been some wonderful memories, I’ve launched books, I’ve opened agricultural shows,” she said.
“I couldn’t have done it if it wasn’t for my family, they gave me 100 per cent support.”
