A NEW ini­tia­tive aims to help re­con­nect peo­ple with their heroes in the emer­gency ser­vices.

Find my Hero Aus­tralia, de­vel­oped by emer­gency ser­vices health in­surer Emer­gency Ser­vices Health, al­lows peo­ple to share sto­ries and ask the com­mu­nity for help in pass­ing the mes­sage on to the re­spon­der.

Emer­gency Ser­vices Health chief ex­ec­u­tive of­fi­cer Michael Oer­tel said giv­ing and re­ceiv­ing thanks had pos­i­tive im­pacts for both peo­ple who had been helped and emer­gency re­spon­ders.

“There is a sig­nif­i­cant amount of re­search which shows that be­ing thanked makes peo­ple feel val­ued and aids their fu­ture per­for­mance of self­less acts,” he said.

“Grat­i­tude is also linked to re­duc­ing de­pres­sion, bet­ter sleep, im­prov­ing self-es­teem, and strength­en­ing our abil­ity to cope with ad­ver­sity.”
