Group hits the street to educate
ON the street and on radio, Harvey Local Drug Action Group will be promoting awareness of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day this Saturday.
The group will be on Uduc Road promoting awareness with a standard drinks display and information.
Group member Deanne Fleay said the day was about making the community aware of the dangers associated with drinking during pregnancy.
Mrs Fleay said the aim of the event was for pregnant women or prospective parents to become more informed about the risks.
“Our ultimate goal is to reduce the numbers of the disorders to zero,” Ms Fleay said.
“We’ll have information and brochures on the day and we’ll be talking on community radio.”
Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is a range of life- long conditions relating to permanent brain damage caused by foetal alcohol exposure.
Ms Fleay said the group formed about five years ago and invited anyone interested in helping the group to come down and have a chat.
“We would love as many peo- ple as possible in Harvey to pop down,” she said.
“Our vision is to empower the community and prevent harm from alcohol and other drugs.”
The group will be hosting another event in October, the Young Voices for Good Choice rally through Harvey.
This event is aimed at 12 to 17year- olds to promote alcohol and drug awareness as well as leadership and team work.
