Workshops help in fire recovery

Brunswick artist Sharon Reeves will host a mosaic workshop in Yarloop next week as part of Harvey Shire Council's Bushfire Recovery Project. Those attending are invited to bring materials from their homes, damaged in the 2016 bushfires, to create a personal piece of art.

THE third Harvey Bushfire Recovery Project workshop happening this Thursday has already attracted great interest from the community, with nearly 20 people expected to take part in the mosaic session.

To be held at the Yarloop Community Resource Centre, Brunswick Junction artist Sharon Reeves will help the attendees make a colourful addition for the front of their house.

“We’re going to be making a house number or outside picture or whatever they want to make,” she said.

Held over consecutive Thursdays, the workshop will have participants designing, gluing and grouting their work for a completed piece by the end.

Ms Reeves is a self-taught artist who was inspired to learn the art-form by the mosaics found around the Harvey townsite by artist Anthea Ward.

Attendees will be able to use items from their Yarloop homes, such as glass, mirrors or tiles – many of which were destroyed in the fires – to add a therapeutic benefit to the workshops.

“If they’ve got things like that they’ve got left from the house, they can put in any- thing,” Ms Reeves said. All other materials for the workshop including tiles and tools, will be provided by the Harvey Shire Council.

Ms Reeves’ work has been exhibited, including one wall mounted work which won the People’s Choice at the Nannup Open Art Exhibition last year.

One more workshop, which will look at sculpting, will be held in the Bushfire Recovery Project before the end of the year.
