CHAMP TO CARRY GAMES BATON
HARVEY champion karate black belt Carol Anne Sophia Tomas will be one of a select few to bear the Queen’s Baton in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games early next year.
On February 23, Carol, 11, will be running a leg of the baton’s visit to Bunbury in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in February 2018.
Carol said she was honoured to have been chosen.
“I feel very honoured, very happy and excited,” she said. “I’m just ready.” Despite only competing in karate for four years, Carol has attained black belt and won the Girls 10/11 Kata division at the International Shotokan Karatedo World Championship in South Africa last year.
Carol also plays with the Harvey Basketball League and was the junior Most Valuable Player and Grand Final Most Valuable Player last season.
The Queen’s Baton will begin its WA leg at Albany, travel to Perth, then north to Karratha with about 300 people to carry it through 19 communities over six days.
