RECENTLY retired Harvey shire councillor John Sabourne was bestowed one of the highest honours in local government when he was made the first Freeman of the Shire.

At the Harvey Shire Council Annual Dinner on November 24, Mr Sabourne was bestowed the honour for his decades of community work, having retired this year after 36 years on the council including 10 years as shire president.

Mr Sabourne said he felt humbled and honoured to be made a Freeman.

He said he was pleased his family was there on the night to see him receive the award.

“We’re a very close-knit family and a very community-minded family,” he said.

“They’ve been my backstop over the years.”

Harvey shire president Tania Jackson presented the award to Mr Sabourne noting his years of service and work with numerous community groups.

“John Sabourne has been dedicated to a broad and long-standing commitment to the Shire of Harvey and his service has been well decorated by organisations he has supported,” Cr Jackson said.

Mr Sabourne has been awarded life memberships at the Brunswick Parents and Citizens Association, Bunbury and Districts Junior Football Association, Harvey Brunswick Leschenault Junior Football Council, Harvey Brunswick Football Club, South West Umpires Association and the WA Local Government Association.

Mr Sabourne has also been a Justice of the Peace since 1984 and in 2015 was made a member of the Order of Australia.

Cr Jackson said the honour of Freeman of the Shire was awarded to a recipient that met the highest threshold of contribution to the community. “We bestow this honour, the first Shire of Harvey Freeman of the Shire, to signify our gratitude and the esteem in which John Sabourne is held in our community.”

Former Harvey shire president and retired councillor John Sabourne was bestowed the first Freeman of the Shire with his wife Margaret in attendance, at Harvey Shire Council’s annual dinner on November 24.
