RECOGNITION FOR AUSTRALIA DAY
THE winner of the 2018 Harvey WA Community Citizen of the Year Janine Quicke has embodied the spirit of volunteering in her numerous roles with Harvey community groups for many years.
Ms Quicke joined Harvey Community Radio in 2011 and has taken on administration and fundraising roles, applied for grants and sponsorships and helped raise money.
She also played a key role as mentor for an autistic boy who received a national award for Best New Program at the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia’s annual awards night.
In 2012, Ms Quicke joined the Harvey Local Drug Action Group and has been secretary, treasurer and events coordinator.
Through the group she has raised community awareness about drug and alcohol misuse.
Ms Quicke founded the Young Voices for Good Choices Foot Rally in 2014 which won an award for Community Engagement and Advocacy at the Local Drug Action National Conference Awards.
She also volunteered to help coordinate and keep alive the Harvey Seniors Christmas Dinner in 2014 – and continues to do so – after reading the long-running event could be cancelled.
Ms Quicke has been a Harvey Lions Club secretary and started the Wish for a Lion program. She has been an active member of the Harvey Business and Professional Women’s Association and is a member of the Local Drug Action Groups Incorporated in Perth.
CONSISTENT and dedicated, Cody Birch was named the 2018 Harvey WA Community Citizen of the Year in the youth category after years of volunteering.
Mr Birch has been an active member of the Harvey Local Drug Action Group for five years, taking part in planning and attending events and acting as a role model for others.
A member of the Harvey Community Radio for three and a half years, Mr Birch is also a member of the committee.
At the station, Mr Birch produced, researched, edited and presented a one hour radio sports program focussing on Harvey sports, in addition to administration work, filing new music and helping other presenters.
A regular volunteer at the Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre, Mr Birch directs visitors to activities and helps clean the equipment and recreation areas.
He also volunteers with the Bunbury Soup Kitchen, the Music Room in Harvey and at the Harvey Seniors Christmas Dinner.
