‘Sextortion’ scam

Harvey-Waroona Reporter - - NEWS -

SOUTH West residents are being warned of “sextortion” scammers who coerce victims into sharing sexually explicit material over social media and dating sites.

The scammers then attempt to extort money from the victims by threatening to send the material to family members, partners or employers.

Since December 2017, eight people have been blackmailed in this way according to WA ScamNet.

Consumer Protection South West regional coordinator Annetta Bellingeri said it was a serious scam because of the emotional trauma it could cause.

She said victims should never send money and should instead call 1300 304 054 to seek help.

She advised victims to block the scammer and report any material uploaded to websites such as YouTube or Facebook.
