Material Man one to be remembered
MYALUP’S Perth Cup winner Material Man could be a horse to be remembered for a long time, according to trainer Justin Warwick.
The 2017 XXXX Gold Bunbury Cup winning gelding is back in work, having not raced since winning the first big feature of the year.
Warwick said the six-yearold’s last campaign was taxing and he needed some time in the paddock to recover.
A trip to Victoria for the Melbourne Sprint is also a possibility for Material Man.
“There are heaps of options for him,” he said.
“He was in work for a long time leading up to the Perth Cup, so he needed a good spell.
“This made us miss the races that are on over there (in Melbourne) now as well as the Sydney Carnival.
“He just could not fit in a holiday and trip over there all at the same time. “But he has had a good break.” Warwick said Material Man would trial in early May before racing in the Belmont Sprint (1400m) in June.
After this Material Man will nominate for another pair of Group 3 races in the Hyperion Stakes (1600m) and Strickland Stakes (2000m).
“These are not easy races because we are up against some good horses, but they are easy in a sense because they are in our backyard and we do not have to travel anywhere,” he said.
“Then he will have a short let up and the owner and myself will sit down.
“We sort of have a couple of plans pencilled in which we will aim to go through with.
“They include Melbourne and here.
“After the races here we will be clearer as to how he is going.
“You have to hope he is going to come back as good as he was last time.”
Warwick said Material Man was “big and strong” and ready for his next campaign.
“He gets angry with us because we won’t let him go fast,” he said.
“He just has a great attitude towards exercise.”
Despite already winning more than $1 million in prize money, Warwick believes Material Man could be better than in his last campaign.
“That was his first time in the deep end,” he said.
“He didn’t race until he was four, so he hasn’t been smashed as a young horse.
“I think the fact that he didn’t get raced early will hold him in good stead. I would be disappointed if he couldn’t race at the top level if he was looked after for years to come.”
Myalup’s Material Man is set to trial early next month after a long spell.
Lucy Warwick became just the second female jockey to ever win the Perth Cup when she rode Material Man to victory in January.
