Season kicks off with good weather and pristine greens
PAST men’s captain and long-standing member Harold Brislin and ladies champion Pam Davey hit the first shots to officially open the 2018 golf season on March 24.
The course was presented in pristine condition and with the weather gods smiling down a great day was had by all members who attended.
Charlie Baggetta turned back the clock to score an impressive 43 points to beat Michael Lowe who scored 38 points. Baggetta who showed signs of returning to form at scroungers with 36 points, played consistent golf to score 21 and 22 points on each 9. Ming Yap was third with 36 points to count out Garry Beacham, Jerome Oliver, John Powell, Jeff Gale and Carl Carulli, who all scored 36 points.
Ladies captain Judith Doyle produced the best ladies score with 35 points to beat Lyn Joyce and Robyn Peet on a countback.
In scroungers on March 28, sponsored by Steve Doyle, Cec Holman continued his good form to come out on top with 39 points to beat Jerome Oliver on a countback. Holman’s winning score was set up by a strong second nine where he scored 21 points. This is the third event in a row where he has played better than his handicap.
On April 7, an excellent field of 64 starters including 10 visitors from City Beach Golf Club, showed up to test their golfing skills in the Ken and Andrew Lomax stableford. Stewart Jones continued his resurgence of good form to be the runaway winner with 40 points. Jones’ improved form has come about with a much improved showing around the greens especially with his chipping. Lynda Ovenden had the best score for the ladies with 37 points.

For the scroungers sponsored by Kevin and Noelene Wooltorton on April 4, 46 players turned up to play in great conditions which showed with the scores been higher than the few previous events. Frank Mazza showed he likes this time of the year as he turned back the clock to produce a great score of 43 points. Mazza’s last win was in March 2017 at veterans In Busselton. Brian Hay was the unlucky golfer to run second with 41 points with the consistent Derek Williams counting out Peter Shine for third with 39 points. Mazza’s win was well deserved and showed that perseverance of this game pays off.
Club ladies champion Pam Davey, men’s captain Garry Beacham (men’s captain), Harold Brislin, and ladies captain Judith Doyle open the season on March 28.
