CAFE and restaurant owners around the South West are being urged to ditch plastic straws, after a local MP successfully had the straws banned in Parliament House dining areas.

In February, Greens South West MLC Diane Evers contacted the catering company at Parliament House in Perth after she noticed staff included plastic straws with all soft drinks served in glasses in the parliamentary dining room.

Ms Evers wrote to the dining room’s catering staff, highlighting the contribution of plastic waste to landfill and the knock-on effects on marine life, waterways, birds and sea mammals.

Ms Evers encouraged anyone concerned about plastic waste to contact venues in the South West that could be willing to make the changes to zero or reusable straws.
