FREQUENT WIRES

Buyers of the plug-in Prius in Japan can earn rewards points for optimising electriconly mode. The points can be used to pay electricity bills or exchanged for products. Points are awarded for distance travelled and the amount of home-charging.

NO TO RX-9

Mazda’s tantalising RX-Vision concept will remain just that — a concept. Chief executive Masamichi Kogai says the company has no plans to launch a sports car any larger than the MX-5. It isn’t ready to kill off the rotary engine just yet, though it’s more likely to find new life as a range-extender than as the primary powerplant.

TESLA RIVAL

Chinese company NextEV wants to create a rival for Tesla’s Model-X. Co-founder Jack Cheng says the 70kWh battery pack will be good for 530km and reckons his new EV will be significantly cheaper than its American rival when sales kick off in the US by early 2019.
