An uncharacteristically low-key and mildly obscure offering from Tom Hanks, who usually works in far more accessible surrounds than this quiet, midlifecrisis drama. He plays Alan Clay, a disillusioned businessman looking for an exit route from the drudgery of corporate life. A sudden trip to Saudi Arabia to secure a lucrative tech deal with a member of the ruling royal family is supposed to recharge Alan’s batteries. However, the rigid rituals that come with persuading someone to sign over a small fortune only serve to drain Alan of what little enthusiasm he has left. An enigmatic adaptation of the novel by Dave Eggers.
