Jessie Ware’s 2012 debut Devotion was praised for its post-dubstep soul. Alas, the Brit then embraced generic sounds (and collaborated with Ed Sheeran). Happily, her third album is avant pop. Ware contemporises ’80s quiet storm and ’90s R&B — even as she writes about marriage and motherhood. The singles leap out — Midnight being Mariah-style power balladry and Selfish Love bossa nova. A duet with The Blue Nile ’s Paul Buchanan is cool, if anticlimactic. / CYCLONE WEHNER
