The second-best movie to come out of New Zealand in 2016 (nothing could have come close in any year to the incomparable Hunt For the Wilderpeople) is a toughminded coming-of-age drama set in Maori farming country in the 1950s. Teenage lad Simeon (newcomer Akuhata Keefe) is well on the way to becoming his own man. However, to go the full distance he is going to have to break free of his controlling grandad (Temuera Morrison of Once Were Warriors fame), as hard line a family patriarch as they come. Adapted by screenwriter John Collee

(Master and Commander) from a novel by revered Kiwi author Witi Ihimaera

(Whale Rider).
