Chris Hemsworth is losing a lot of personal prime time in his acting career due to his extensive contractual obligations to Marvel. Sure, he gets paid a stack of dough to keep playing Thor in various interlinked Marvel blockbusters. Nevertheless, the charismatic Aussie star rarely gets a chance to truly push himself as an actor. So it is definitely a refreshing change to see Hemsworth wading into some relatively challenging waters out front of a lively, globetrotting cyberthriller. Hemsworth plays Nick Hathaway, a notorious hacker who has been temporarily been freed from jail to help authorities find an evil programmer threatening to insert destructive malware into a Chinese nuclear reactor. What should be a cheesy premise is given some credible heft by the knowledge it is master filmmaker Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral) at the controls here. Mann’s dizzying stylistic flourishes and inventive ways of switching from the digital realm to exciting real-world action sequences are impossible to tire of. Co-stars Viola Davis.
