“Knowing is good, but knowing everything is better,” declares Eamon Bailey, a Steve Jobs-like tech guru played by Tom Hanks in this middling cyber-thriller. Things get interesting when one of Bailey’s young employees, Mae Holland (Emma Watson), takes his tohell-with-privacy policy to dangerous extremes. Based on a 2013 novel by Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius), this film already feels a touch too dated to be taken seriously as the cautionary tale for the digital age it clearly wants to be. But when viewed as an enjoyably silly guilty pleasure (the last act is full of hi-tech howlers), no one will be bored, that’s for sure.
