The power play OTHER WORLDS
With one more sleep to go before the world loses its lunch over Star Wars: The Last Jedi, here are five streaming ways to get to know the cast that little bit better ...
WHILE WE’RE YOUNG (2014) NETFLIX, STAN
Adam Driver (the villainous Kylo Ren) is a deceptively versatile performer, equally at home with the serious or the funny stuff. He all but stole this wonderful US indie comedy from a decorated cast a few years back, playing an ambitious filmmaking hipster whose toocool-for-school ways trigger an obsessive meltdown in his mentor (Ben Stiller). Driver shows enough here to suggest a comedy with him in the lead could really be something.
QUEEN OF KATWE (2016) FOXTEL NOW, NETFLIX
Lupita Nyong’o (who plays the ancient space tavern proprietor Maz Kanata via the magic of motion-capture technology) is the true acting anchor of one of the best family films of recent times. She plays the mother of a poverty-stricken African girl about to take the chess world by storm. The movie started life as a magazine article and then a short film for the US sports giant ESPN, and is as inspirational as it is irresistible.
BALIBO (2009) STAN
Oscar Isaac (Resistance Xwing fighter pilot Poe Dameron in the Star Wars saga) is fast becoming one of the greatest actors of his generation. However, what many do not know is that the American star got his start here in Australia, playing the legendary East Timor freedom fighter and politician Jose Ramos Horta. This moving drama on the tragedy that befell Australian journalists in 1975 has stood the test of time very strongly.
IMPERIAL DREAMS (2014) NETFLIX
British-born John Boyega (the reformed stormtrooper Finn) surprised many by landing the
Star Wars gig so early in his career, but he did already have some top-notch work under his belt. In this gritty urban drama, he plays a 21-year-old ex-con newly released from jail and trying his best to go straight as a promising writer. Boyega excels in the heaviest, highly emotional scenes of this well-crafted movie.
THE EAGLE HUNTRESS (2016) FOXTEL NOW
Daisy Ridley (the franchise’s indomitable heroine Rey) is in the same boat as compatriot John Boyega, with only three non-Star Wars credits to her name to date. This beguiling documentary narrated by Ridley is the only streaming option available to sample her considerable talent. The movie is set on the steppes of Outer Mongolia, where a teenage girl is defying 2000 years of history by becoming the first female hunter of her people.
