CATCH MY DRIFT

Herald Sun - Motoring - - Special Report -

BEAU Yates is typical of many youngsters in motorsport. He began in motocross - and still uses his favourite helmet from the dirt-track days - but his battered body forced him to find something another hobby.

One night he took up a friend’s invitation to attend a drift event at Oran Park Raceway in Sydney, and was hooked.

‘‘It opened my eyes. And I haven’t looked back,’’ Yates says.

‘‘I used to drive my Corolla to the events. And I won everything I went in.’’

So the 25-year-old upholsterer, who also flies model planes— sometimes inside the house he shares with his partner Bec— gradually improved his car and moved up the ranks.

‘‘I started in ’05 in Drift Australia— 2006 was a stellar year when I won the championship.

‘‘This year I’m still a chance for the championship with one race left.’’
