Haul aboard for big-rig test
The search is back on for the country’s best young driver, writesGRAHAMSMITH
SCANIA and the Australian Trucking Association will hold the Young Australian Driver of the Year Award next year for the second time. Victorian David Whyte drove off in a new Scania P420 primemover in the inaugural Award last year, beating a field of talented young drivers from around the country in the Sydney final.
Like last time, the search will be held in all mainland states, with run-offs in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Finalists from each state will battle for the final honours in Melbourne.
The winner will drive away in a new Scania prime mover valued at $220,000.
‘‘The Young Australian Driver of the Year competition last year attracted a huge number of entrants and some quality contestants took part in the regional competitions,’’ Scania marketing manager John Kananghinis says.
‘‘The national final showed that today’s truck drivers are a professional, courteous and skilled group who can be proud of their driving prowess.’’
All contestants will go through a tough series of tests under the scrutiny of a judging panel that will assess their theoretical knowledge, practical skills driving and manoeuvring trucks, their knowledge of rules and regulations, and their ability to run a successful business.
The Australian competition is modelled on other competitions run by Scania in other parts of the world, and all local contestants will be judged against international benchmarks.
‘‘It would be fair to say we will again attract the cream of young drivers to take part in this very worthwhile event,’’ Kananghinis says.
‘‘I can’t think of a better way to get your career off to a flying start than to win the Young Australian Driver of the Year Award.’’
Entries open in May and the regional events take place in September ahead of the final in October.
