Sprintcars’ prize guys
SUMMER is fast approaching and that means two things, warm weather and the speedway season. The Sprintcar Racing Association of Victoria will launch its new season this weekend ahead of the opening race on October 11.
With increased sponsorship, the 2008-09 series will have a prize pool of more than $180,000, according to SRAV chairman Ian Vale. Each round will offer $5000 for the win.
‘‘With the sponsorship we have from Eureka Garages and Sheds and other sponsors, we are offering more than $30,000 just for the end-of-season prize pool for the top 15 drivers. They have really stepped up,’’ Vale says.
Defending champion Matthew Reed is back to defend his crown, but he will have his work cut out.
‘‘We would expect to average 30-34 cars each night,’’ Vale says.
Three-time champion John Vogles is competing. Others to look out for include Mike van Bremen, Darren Mollenyoux and Steve Lines. And three-time Australian Dirt Modified champion Tim Morse is stepping up to Sprintcar racing this season.
Defending: Sprintcar champion Matthew Reed will be fighting to retain his crown.
