THE downturn in Australia’s luxury-car sales, off by more than 15 per cent last month for the main contenders, has had zero impact on the costliest Mercedes-Benz here.

The Mercedes SL 65 AMG Black Series has sparked a gold rush worth more than $5 million to the company, and a nearsellout result for a car costing close to $650,000.

Nine of the 10 cars allocated for local owners have sold and MercedesBenz Australia is chasing extra supplies.

‘‘Initially we thought we could sell five cars, but we went for 10. We potentially have more people interested,’’ MercedesBenz spokesman David McCarthy says.

‘‘Most are existing AMG owners. Two have Italian cars.’’

The SL success follows a sellout with 40 $300,000 CLK Black Series cars.
