Little bang for your buck

The JCW has a hefty engine and a hefty price, writes JAMESSTANFORD

EVEN if you pay thousands of dollars for a TV, there is always one that is bigger and better. It’s the same with cars, and the Mini is a good case in point.

Most people would be happy to to pay $33,300 for the base Mini. There is also the option of upgrading to turbo Cooper S for $45,400 or the loaded Chilli version for $45,700.

Now an even better and more expensive John Cooper Works model has just become king of the range and demands a hefty price.

It costs $48,800 for the regular hatch and $51,300 for the longer Clubman version.

The JCW outfit used to supply hot-up kits for Minis, but now the operation has been brought in-house.

The JCW cars are a complete package and are fully developed by Mini.

The Cooper S Minis generate 128kW and 240Nm, but the JCW cars manage 155kW and 260Nm.

As is the case with the Cooper S Minis, the JCW is able to release an extra 20Nm in short bursts.

They use the same base engine, a turbo 1.6-litre four-cylinder, but the JCWs have a range of upgrades.

This mechanical massage includes increased boost pressure, a stronger cylinder head and valves, a new air intake and a free-flowing exhaust.

This means a 0-100km/h sprint of 6.5 seconds for the JCW Mini and 6.8 seconds for the JCW Clubman.

Official fuel consumption comes in at 9.2 litres for 100km for the JCW Mini and 9.3 litres/100km for the Clubman.

Mini has also given the JCW a special sports suspension set-up with firmer dampers and thicker anti-roll bars at the front and rear.

JCW Minis sit 10mm lower than Cooper S models.

In terms of brakes, the JCW cars come with four piston front calipers, painted bright red.

The wheels are the same size as Cooper S models, 17 inches, but they have a unique design and are lighter.

They are fitted with run-flat tyres and there is no spare.

The Mini also comes with electronic stability control, but this can be turned off.

It also has a suite of airbags, bixenon headlights, optional bonnet stripes, leather/cloth seats, climate control, premium sound system, piano black interior and Bluetooth connectivity.
