Skills shortage

Isuzu’s Phil Taylor says major changes are needed if the industry is to meet the challenges coming in the next decade or so. One of the most pressing is the recruitment of young people. Almost 46 per cent of the workforce is aged 45 years and over, while 96 per cent of vacancies remain unfilled. Private driver training organisations are helping fill the void, but more needs to be done, Taylor says. ‘‘If Australia is to meet the needs of the future freight task, both the private sector and governments must work more closely towards overcoming our skills shortage,’’ he says.
