MENTION Evo to a rally fan and they go weak at the knees. Evo, short for Evolution, is what Mitsubishi calls its rally-winning version of the Lancer and any rally nut knows it means awesome performance.

The Evo springs from the humble small car that also carries the Lancer name tag, but by the time Mitsubishi bolts on the Evo badges it’s become a fire-breathing, tyre-frying performance car of the highest order.

Mitsubishi hasn’t always offered the Lancer Evo here in Australia, but rally fans have been able to sample the hot rally-bred hatch in recent times with the launch here of several models, including the eighth-generation Evo VIII in 2004. ONLY 200 were sold so they hold their value quite well, but $30,000 to $35,000 should buy one of the most thrilling rides on Aussie roads.

Fast and furious: the Mitsubishi Evo VIII is something very special if you value performance above all else.
