More green lights for green cars

SHOULD green cars get special treatment in Australia? Sydney broadcaster Steve Price says definitely not, arguing that sports cars are just as special as hybrids and entitled to just as much access to special parking spaces and bus and transit lanes.

But there is a push for special treatment for hybrid cars, such as the Toyota Prius and the new Honda Insight.

The policy at carsGuide is to push for a broader brush for all sorts of green cars, from plug-in electrics to hybrids, diesels and even efficient petrol power.

Suzuki Australia’s livewire boss, Tony Devers, wants the Federal Government to give an official ruling on the true colour of green, arguing that the benchmark should be set at fuel consumption better than 7 litres for 100km and emissions of less than 130g/km of CO2.

It seems like a reasonable starting point, but there is sure to be a lot of argument before there is a final ruling.
