GWM makes a range of Hover variants and it’s either the H3 or H5 that will arrive around Christmas priced at about $25,000.
The Hover— again, the name will change to save embarrassment— is a proper 4WD with an electronic low-range gearbox.
But the ground clearance is only 175mm and subjectively the Mitsubishi 2.4-litre engine may have its work cut out in a fully laden Hover. Even without occupants, the wagon weighs 1805kg which will tax the 100kW/160Nm engine. A diesel is in the pipeline.
It’s likely the Hover will come in initially as a five-speed manual.
Hover will attract people who want a sensible and structurally strong five-seater that’s built to a price.
Standard features are expected to include a minimum of two airbags, CD stereo, electric windows and alloy wheels.
