Basco’s small wonder

SMALL trucks deliver big time for Joe Basile, who has made a specialty of delivering cold food to small metropolitan supermarkets that are difficult for bigger vehicles to access. Basile once drove for Linfox but saw an opportunity for a specialised fleet of refrigerated trucks able to service the smaller supermarkets. Basile’s Basco Transport now has two Isuzus that deliver meat, fruit and vegetables after it has been trucked into Melbourne from interstate producers. ‘‘The majority of the refrigerated food we deliver comes in from interstate in semi-trailers,’’ Basile says. ‘‘To take the pressure off the drivers, and to save them from running around Melbourne in large prime movers and semis, they subcontract some of their work out to me and I do their smaller local drop-offs.’’
