Volvo took on the hybrid powertrain challenge back in the early 1980s, which means years of development and testing have gone into the new FE Hybrid that is now being rolled out in Europe. The parallel hybrid truck is ideally suited to jobs such as waste collection where the truck is on a tough stop-start drive cycle. No more will folk awake to the rumble of a diesel engine; with the hybrid they will barely hear the muted hum of the electric motor. As well as the lower noise, there is also a reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of 15-20 per cent, Volvo says.
