ALLISON Transmission is fitting a second reverse gear on its 4700 and 4800 gearboxes to give drivers more control on steep grades. It says the deep reverse, available from mid-next year, will give greater control and engine braking on steep gradients, and increase manoeuvrability in tight spaces. With a mechanical ratio of 17.12, the second reverse will have an effective torque converter-multiplied ratio up to 32.5:1.
