New bodies on the way

CSIRO researchers are working on a new generation of super-strong, lightweight polymer composites that could be used for trucks, trains and planes. Dr Stuart Bateman of the CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering division says: ‘‘Composites with improved mechanical properties allow greater design flexibility and the downgauging of wall thickness for additional weight savings. We use nanotechnologies to improve the mechanical performance of conventional composite materials, and at the same time introduce valuable functional properties previously not possible in composites.’’
